Congrats. What is it?

She's a baby leopard gecko.

Probably a 'hypomelanistic' which means that instead of being yellow/white with black spots all over, she'll be yellow/white with a spotty head, spotty tail, and just a few or no spots between shoulder and hip.

The yellowish bulges you see behind her are her 'sisters' (at least, I assume they'll all hatch female...)

I just wish that the first baby of the year would have been one we could justify KEEPING. We've already got two years' worth of first-babies-who-were-hypomelanistic, so I can't justify another one!

Cool. I don't know much about lizards... I assume Hypermellanistic would mean she'd be a lot darker with more spots, or totally black?

Yes, a hypermelanistic (though it'd be shortened to 'melanistic') animal would have a darker, muddy ground colour and a higher spot density. There hasn't been a verified solid-black adult animal yet... but boy, I'd love to have one.

But they're so cute! How old are they when you sell them?

I won't sell any on until they're visually sexable as male or female, which means hanging on to them for two or three months.

Yay! Glad to see you're still up and kicking. New babies, of any sort, are always wonderful. ^^ Reminds me a bit of when my mom was breeding cats... the kittens always just made me light up.

How many geckos does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

None, geckos don't screw in a lightbulb. They screw in a vivarium.

But still, congratulations! Are they still living in our lovingly-crafted masterpiece of wood and glass, or do they have a more up-market home now?

They've gone upmarket *grins* They've got a much larger masterpiece of wood and glass lovingly hand-crafted by a professional, and our own masterpiece has been taken to bits and transformed magically into a rack system for rearing babies.

But there's a new swearingly and screamingly and shoutingly masterpiece to come - a 72 inch by 30 inch by 35 inch vivarium for our family's second-newest acquisition, Domino. Domino is three feet long and only half grown... and this is she.
